AD 37-c. 100. Jewish historian and general,
born in Jerusalem. He became a Pharisee and
commanded the Jewish forces in Galilee in
their revolt against Rome from AD 66 (which
ended with the mass suicide at Masada). When
captured, he gained the favour of the Roman
emperor Vespasian and settled in Rome as a
citizen. He wrote Antiquities of the Jews, an
early history to AD 66; The Jewish War; and
an autobiography.
